- The album was completed for Antoine-Louis-Henri Polier de Bottens (1741–1795) in Lucknow
between June 1784 and December 1787 at the earliest, before Polier left India from
Calcutta in January 1788. This is evident from a miniature copy of an oil portrait
of the Mughal crown prince Mīrzā Jawān Bakht (1749-1788) (f. 13a), which Johan Zoffany
(1733-1810) created in the summer of 1784 for Colonel Claude Martin (1735-1800) in
Lucknow.
The album is composed of double pages, each with a calligraphy – mostly in Nastaʿlīq – on the left and a miniature on the right. The calligraphic pieces, 26 of which are signed, date mainly from the 18th century. Most of them are signed by the Lucknow calligrapher Muḥammad ʿAlī and dated between 1195/1780-81 and 1199/1784-85. Some older pieces can be found on f. 6v (dated 1006/1597-98), 8v, 20v (1079/1668-69), 30v (1065/1654-55).
